The Story of the Nike 6.0 Mutant
Nike 6.0 launched in 2005. A bold move into action sports like skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding, surfing, motocross, and wakeskate. To promote it, Nike created the Mutant. A two-headed monster that first appeared as shadows cast on UK streets before becoming real rubber figurine.
In the U.S, 10,000 Mutants were hidden in skateparks, basketball courts, and malls. Each one came with an ankle tag linking to a secret website, where you logged your find, unlocked exclusive 6.0 content, and entered contests. Nike even took the chaos online, a digital Mutant would hijack your webpages, and surviving the glitch earned you a real figure mailed to your door.
Standing about 5 inches tall and stamped with NKE 6.0 across the chest and NKE6.com on the foot, these figurines were produced in 12 colors.
Nike 6.0 discontinued in 2011, the Mutants remain rare artifacts. A piece of sneaker, toy, and action sports history that collectors chase to this day.
